Conservatives believe that family is the cornerstone of society. I am proud to be running on a platform that will support families by making it more affordable to start and grow a family.
If we form government, Conservatives will allow parents who earn up to $1000 to continue to be on maternity or paternity leave. We reject the current government’s one size fits all approach to child care. Our plan will cover 75% of childcare costs for low-income families and help support all Albertans making up to $150,000. The choice to start a family is a great sacrifice, but it also has positive consequences for everyone, because those children will become the workers of tomorrow when those currently in the workforce age into retirement. Our social programs depend on continuing to have new workers enter the workforce, supporting those who are not able to work any longer.
Supporting families is important because it provides them with the support they need but it is also a clear recognition of the important role that families play in society.
We will also support families who go through the tragedy of miscarriage by providing them bereavement leave. Parents who lose a child will also not be kicked off EI parental benefits, we will allow them to remain on those benefits for 8 weeks. We will also provide up to 8 weeks of paid leave for parents who lose a child.
